As Homer Simpson once said, "Beer is the cause of and solution to all of life's problems." On Friday, April 23, you be the judge as Landmarks Association and Reedy Press sponsor a lecture and book-signing with Don Roussin and kevin Kious, two of the authors of St. Louis Brews, 200 years of Brewing in St. Louis, 1809-2009. The venue for the lecture is still to be determined. On the next two Saturdays following the lecture, (April 24 and May 5) Landmarks will reprise its brewing-related sites and buildings tour of south St. Louis. Historically, St. Louis was one of the great beer-producing cities in the nation. While prohibition and its aftermath wreaked havoc on our brewing landscape, many buildings related to the industry survive and are currently being re-used. Interestingly, several of these buildings are once again occupied by brewers and related industries. The tour will visit the former malting house for Schnaiders Brewery (Vin de Set Restaurant on Chouteau), Square One Brewery (which was once a bar that was "tied" to Anheuser Busch in the years before prohibition), the rehabilitated stables for the former Lemp Brewery (now a microbrewery called The Stable), as well as drive by and discuss others including the remains of the Stiefel/Union Brewery on Gravois, the Cherokee Brewery on Cherokee Street, and the Greentree Brewery and Feuerbacher Mansion in Soulard.
The Lecture is free; tickets for the tour cost $35.00 members/$40.00 for non-members, includes transportation, snacks and two beers.
Reservations required one week in advance of each event. Reservations by phone at 314-421-6474 or email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
The tour will leave from Landmarks Offices at 911 Washington Avenue at 1:00 and return by 5:00; transportation will be provided.
